James Hansen competed in NASA stock car racing in 2005, the sole season on his record. Over four starts, he accumulated no wins or podiums and finished an average of 5.7 positions from the back of the classified field, ending the season in nineteenth place. His rating of 961 places him among developing drivers; the level describes club and regional racing, competitors with real competition licences operating in fields that do not typically include full professionals.[1]

Hansen's record shows a mixed head-to-head against his rivals in that single season. He finished ahead of Manuel Gil del Real, a more experienced driver rated 1,709, in all three races they shared, and beat Jeffrey Glowniak twice in three meetings. Against the stronger end of the field, however, the results turned decisively. He failed to finish ahead of Ken Stinnett, who would become the 2006 NASA American Stock Car champion, across three races, and suffered the same result against Scott Ivie, a back-to-back champion in the same series in 2004 and 2005. Dodge fielded him in two of his four starts; the team's strongest driver on record elsewhere is David Pintaric, a professional-level competitor rated 3,039 and not someone Hansen encountered.
