Dave Dunlap was a developing amateur racer whose rating of 902 places him at the entry level of competitive motorsport; his career shows consistent participation but no podium finishes across his four seasons of racing. Between 2005 and 2008, Dunlap made 12 starts in NASA competition, averaging a finishing position of 8.3 across classified results. His most frequent opponents were NASA CMC champions; he raced against James Griffith III nine times, finishing ahead of the two-time series champion on two occasions, and faced Tony Guaglione, the 2008 NASA CMC2 champion, in nine shared races, where he finished ahead of him four times. Against Nick Steel, a 2003 NASA CMC champion, Dunlap had a more difficult record, finishing ahead only once in nine meetings.[1]

Dunlap's head-to-head record against his peers showed mixed results typical of a driver at his level; he finished ahead of Kevin Margetta five times in eight races and had winning records against less-experienced drivers such as Ed Hamilton and Kirk Theis. His three starts with Ford yielded no results against a team that fielded stronger competitors elsewhere. Dunlap's final recorded appearance was in 2008, when he finished 65th in a NASA round, after which he retired from racing.
