David Pennington competed in a single season of Formula Car racing in 2019, making six starts in the Lucas Oil Formula Car Race Series. His rating of 2,273 places him in the competitive amateur band; this describes a driver quick at club and regional level who races against professionals but does not consistently beat them. Pennington recorded two podium finishes across his six races, enough to average a fifth-place finish, though he ended the season ranked fifteenth in the championship.[1]

His head-to-head record against his regular rivals was mixed. Pennington finished ahead of Michael Myers, the 2019 Lucas Oil Formula Car Race Series champion, in three of their six meetings, but trailed Myers in the other three. Against Prescott Campbell, a more established semi-professional driver, Pennington won the head-to-head record 2-4. He also raced against stronger drivers; he finished ahead of Steven Thomas, an FIA Bronze-graded sportscar driver and later international champion, twice in three meetings, and beat Nate Aranda and Ryan Nash, both semi-professionals, in their respective encounters. These were bright spots in what remained a competitive rather than dominant debut season. Pennington has not raced since 2019 and is now retired from motorsport.
