Derrek Morehead is a semi-professional racing solo sprint events in NASA, a national multiclass championship where up to fifteen classes share the track in a single race. He competes primarily in the Thunder Roadster GTR class, driving a purpose-built tube-frame roadster with a Hayabusa engine, and has also raced Porsche 944s in the 944 Spec class. His primary team operates the Thunder Roadster GTR platform and has fielded five drivers across the index, with Morehead as its strongest competitor.[1]
Across nine seasons from 2018 to 2026, Morehead has accumulated 41 wins and 74 podiums from 99 starts. He won three NASA championships: in 2019 driving the 944, and in 2024 and 2026 in the Thunder Roadster GTR. The 2026 season remains in progress with fourteen rounds completed; Morehead leads the championship standings with ten wins and twelve podiums so far.[2]
Morehead typically finishes ahead of club-level regulars on the NASA grid, including Stu Jones and Shane Denney, both of whom he has raced multiple times. He has also beaten Michael Cooper, a FIA Silver–graded professional who has competed extensively in IMSA Pilot Challenge and GT4 America as well as NASA, a result that places Morehead among the stronger drivers in a field mixing semi-professionals and amateurs with graded professionals and established series competitors.
