John Phillips III was a competitive amateur racing in national multiclass sprint championships in the United States. He drove Mazda MX-5 Miatas in NASA's Spec Miata classes across five seasons from 2007 to 2011, then returned to club-level competition in SCCA Majors in 2021, driving a small-bore tuner car in the STL class.[1]
Phillips took 13 wins and 15 podiums across 19 starts. His primary work came in NASA between 2007 and 2011, where he accumulated 12 wins and 13 podiums in 17 starts in Spec Miata competition. He returned to racing a decade later for two SCCA Majors rounds in 2021, winning once and taking a second podium, finishing 18th in the championship standings for that series.[2]
He raced regularly against competitive amateur opposition and usually finished ahead of Trevor McCallion, a competitor who has contested NASA and SCCA Majors throughout a longer career. Phillips also beat entry-level professional Hernan Palermo, who has run 89 NASA starts and spent considerable time in Whelen Mazda Cup competition, on three occasions. His wins came against the field he raced in; his record shows a driver consistently quick in spec-class sprint racing on road courses.
