Luis Vargas holds a Racer Rating of 1,995, placing him in the club racing band; this is the entry level of competitive racing, where drivers operate in regional and local fields against amateur competition. His career consisted of a single season in 2016, during which he started seven times in the Lucas Oil Formula Car Race Series and finished fifth in the final standings with one podium to his name.[1]

Across his seven races, Vargas averaged a fifth-place finish. He competed primarily against drivers of similar calibre, running a mixed head-to-head record against his most frequent rivals. He finished ahead of Nathaniel Sintros in three of their seven shared races but trailed him in four; he had a slightly better record against Parker Petit, winning that battle in four of seven encounters. Against stronger opposition, Vargas showed occasional competitive moments; he beat Chris Archinaco, a FIA Bronze graded driver, once in five shared races and finished ahead of a few drivers rated above him, including a single result ahead of Aaron Jeansonne, a FIA Silver professional rated at 4,894. However, he was consistently outpaced by Mathias Soler, who won the 2016 Lucas Oil Formula Car Race Series Championship; Vargas failed to finish ahead of Soler across five races they shared.

After the 2016 season, Vargas did not continue racing and is now retired from the sport.
