Matt Downing is a club-level racer with a rating of 1,710, placing him in the developing to early-competitive amateur range. This means he races in regional and club competition against genuine licensed drivers, but typically finishes mid-field and has not yet established a consistent pattern of beating the same competitors.[1]

Downing has completed four seasons of SCCA racing from 2021 through 2025, with 11 starts across regional, national major, and national Runoffs events. His sole win came in SCCA Regionals competition, and he has recorded six podiums overall, though his average finishing position across all classified starts stands at sixth. His most consistent competition has come in the Regionals, where he has contested six races and finished on the podium in all of them. Against his most frequent rivals, he holds a strong head-to-head record against club-level drivers; he finished ahead of Tom Hopson, a 2022 SCCA Regionals B-Spec champion, seven times in eight shared races. However, he has struggled against stronger professional-calibre competitors, notably going 1-4 against Frank Schwartz, the 2022 SCCA Regionals ITB champion, and 0-4 against Andy Doyle. Downing has occasionally beaten drivers of considerably higher rating, including national major championship winner David Daughtery and 2025 SCCA Majors B-Spec champion Josh Schmidt, though these remain isolated results rather than established patterns.

Downing remains active as of 2024, with his most recent appearance at the SCCA Runoffs that year. His development at club level continues, with room to progress should his consistency against mid-tier competition improve.
