Michael Stephens competed as a semi-professional driver, the level at which drivers win races in pro-am and one-make classes and run mid-pack among full professionals. His Racer Rating of 2,966 places him in the competitive amateur band; he raced only in the 2002 Star Mazda Championship, where he made two starts without reaching the podium and finished thirty-fourth overall in the season.[1]
Stephens' single season placed him against drivers of considerable standing. He finished ahead of Pierre Ehret, an FIA Bronze graded professional, on two occasions; he also beat Glenn Cooper, Justin Pruskowski, and John Olsen, all established drivers in their own right. His average finishing position across his two starts was twenty-fifth, reflecting consistent mid-field competitiveness in a professional single-seater field. After 2002, Stephens retired from racing and has not returned to competition.
