Richard Safreno was a developing amateur racer who competed in NASA's multiclass sprint championship across a 17-year span from 2003 to 2019. He raced primarily for BMW 325is in the Spec E30 class, a single-driver spec series built around first-generation BMW E30 3-series machinery, and also drove Mazda RX-7s in the Pro 7 category. NASA fields amateurs and semi-professionals alongside graded professionals in the same race, and Safreno made 72 starts across ten seasons of indexed activity in that environment.[1]
His record yielded ten podiums from 72 starts. In his final indexed season in 2019 he finished 70th in the championship standings across three rounds. His most recent and consistent opposition included Sean Quinlan, an entry-level professional with FIA Bronze grading and a background spanning NASA, IMSA Pilot Challenge and IMSA VP Racing SportsCar Challenge, whom Safreno met regularly and ran closely with across their head-to-heads. Against James Gouveia Jr., another developing driver active in NASA, Safreno typically finished ahead. Over his career he defeated both Quinlan and Aristotle Balogh, an entry-level professional with Bronze grading and concurrent experience in IMSA Pilot Challenge and American Endurance Racing, on multiple occasions, though both drivers outpaced him more often than not.[2]
