Ryoji Sumida is a developing amateur competitor who raced in NASA's multiclass championship during 2007 and 2008, driving a naturally aspirated Porsche 944 in the 944 Cup class. His career on record spans nine starts across two seasons in a field mixing amateurs, semi-professionals and graded professionals in the same races.[1]
Sumida took three podiums from those nine starts. In his final season, 2008, he finished 18th in the championship standings after contesting seven of the season's rounds and scoring two podiums. His results came against drivers of similar standing, including regular opponents Ernie Jakubowski and Vito Valentino, both developing competitors with their own modest records in club and amateur racing. Sumida typically finished behind Jakubowski but ran closely matched with Valentino. He beat Matthew Marks, who had competed in twenty-six NASA races and PCA Club Racing, once across their meetings, and finished ahead of Robert Page, another NASA regular with thirty-three starts, twice.[2]
