James Harrell was a developing driver in the NASA national club racing series, where he raced solo in the Spec Miata class, driving a Mazda MX-5 in spec trim, between 2016 and 2021. He made 42 starts across six seasons with a team that fielded 125 drivers and won 83 races in the index; his strongest effort came in 2021, when he finished 95th in the championship standings after four rounds.[1]
Against regular club-level opposition, Harrell typically finished behind drivers such as Bayani Dia and Keith Williamson, both of whom had considerably more starts in the series. He finished ahead of entry-level professionals Camden Gruber and Aiden Baker Crouse once each; Crouse had 66 NASA starts and competed in multiple series including BMW CCA Club Racing, and Gruber combined 43 NASA starts with experience in SCCA Majors and SCCA Regionals. Harrell raced most often with the Miata team, accounting for 19 of his 42 starts, where the strongest driver on the roster across the full index was entry-level professional Tyler Cooke.[2]
