Joe Fry was a British racing driver whose Formula 1 career consisted of a single start for Maserati in 1950, where he finished 23rd and did not score points. His entry into international single-seater racing came late in his competitive life, after he had already established himself in British hill climb racing during the 1930s, where he held outright records at Prescott and multiple class records at Shelsley Walsh.[1]
The 1950 grid represented the beginning of the World Championship and included many of the era's leading drivers. Fry's sole classified finish came against a competitive field, and he managed to beat Johnny Claes, a professional driver of considerably stronger standing. However, a single race provides limited evidence of his standing relative to contemporary professionals. His retirement status dates from 1950, ending a racing career that had been concentrated in domestic hill climb competition before his brief World Championship appearance.[2]
