Applegate's record placed him among amateurs and semi-professionals in a field that ranged from developing drivers to graded competitors. He finished ahead of William Alsup, a semi-professional with 48 starts in the series, on three occasions, and once beat Thomas Lee, who went on to win the Class 2 championship twice. Against Jake Katznelson, a fellow regular and later Class 4 champion, he was closely matched. He typically finished behind John Fort, a developing driver, across their meetings.[2]
