Richard Mathews is a competitive amateur; his Racer Rating of 2,754 places him at the front of club racing and regional competition, the level of quick, usually self-funded drivers racing against professionals rather than with them. Mathews' career on record spans a single season in 2003, when he started one race in the Star Mazda Championship.[1]

In his sole Star Mazda outing, Mathews finished twenty-seventh. He nevertheless recorded results against a field that included Moses Smith, the 2002 Star Mazda champion, along with other established professionals such as Jamie Bach, Mike Anderson, and Brian Theines; he finished ahead of each of these drivers in that single race. The scale of this competitive context, beating a national-level champion and multiple professionals in one appearance, sets his result apart from his final classification, though one race supplies limited basis to assess his true pace against such opposition.

Mathews has been retired from racing since 2003.
