🏳️ Sumpter Smith

Sumpter Smith raced as a developing competitor in NASA, a national multiclass sprint championship mixing amateur and semi-professional drivers across fifteen classes in a single race; he competed in the production-car PTD class and the spec BMW E30 class, primarily driving a BMW 325IS, from 2011 to 2018.[1]

Smith made 73 starts across eight seasons and took four podiums. He finished 77th in the 2018 championship standings in his final campaign, which comprised six rounds. His results came against a field of drivers at his own level and some semi-professionals; he was closely matched with Scott Gress, a fellow developing competitor with 279 NASA starts, and regularly finished behind Sandro Espinosa, a semi-professional who has raced NASA, club racing and American Endurance Racing.[2]

Smith beat entry-level professionals on single occasions, including Eric Powell, who has raced in GT4 America, IMSA Pilot Challenge and the World Endurance Championship. He and Gress occupied the middle order of a field anchored by stronger drivers such as the BMW 325IS team's most successful pilot, Lance Bergstein, an entry-level professional.
