James Hakewill races club-level single-seater racing in SCCA Regionals and SCCA Majors, driving a 2-liter Formula Continental open-wheel car in a multiclass national championship where amateurs, semi-professionals and graded professionals share the track. He has been active since 2022.[1]
Across his five indexed seasons, Hakewill has taken two wins and eight podiums from twelve starts, all in the FC class. His record spans SCCA Regionals from 2022 through 2026, where he has won twice and taken seven podiums in ten starts, and a pair of appearances in SCCA Majors in 2022 that yielded one podium. In the current 2026 season, still in progress, he has won once and taken two podiums from two rounds and currently sits sixth in the championship standings.[2]
Hakewill runs in fields that include competitive amateur and entry-level professional drivers with significant higher-series experience. His regular opponents at Regionals are Daniel Swanbeck, an FIA Silver-graded amateur who has contested the series eighteen times, and Troy Shooter, a competitive amateur with twenty-two Regionals starts; Hakewill and Swanbeck are closely matched, though Shooter typically finishes ahead of him. He has beaten entry-level professionals including David Cheng, who competes in the WeatherTech Championship and WEC, and Chuck Hulse, a former Star Mazda Championship driver, on multiple occasions.
