James Murphy was a club racing driver based in American single-seater and endurance competition. His career spanned four seasons from 2009 to 2018, with his principal activity in BMW CCA Club Racing between 2009 and 2012. Across 15 starts in recorded racing, he took one win and five podium finishes, placing him at a developing to club level of competition with a Racer Rating of 1,212. His most frequent rivals were other club and semi-professional drivers; he maintained a winning record against Scott Reiman, a BMW CCA Club Racing champion, finishing ahead of him in seven of ten shared races, and beat David Wollman in six of nine encounters, though he struggled against Geoff Atkinson, trailing him six times in nine races.[1]

Murphy's single win came in BMW CCA Club Racing, where he averaged a finishing position of approximately fourth across his 13 starts in that series. His foray into American Endurance Racing in 2018 yielded no finishes across two starts, and his final recorded racing activity was in BMW CCA Club Racing in 2012, when he finished 37th in two rounds. Throughout his career, he occasionally finished ahead of much stronger drivers; he beat Rob Jackowitz, the 2017 American Endurance Racing Class 5 champion, twice, and recorded isolated victories over several other professional and bronze-graded competitors. Murphy has since retired from competitive racing.[2]
