Bill Shields held a Racer Rating of 2,179, placing him in the competitive amateur band; he raced against paid drivers and quick self-funded competitors in club-level fields, a real competition licence holder but not competing at professional strength. His career consisted of two seasons in the Lucas Oil Formula Car Race Series between 2016 and 2017, a span of 18 starts across which he scored one win and eight podium finishes. He finished fourth overall in the 2017 season after 14 rounds, posting an average finishing position of P4.9 across all races.[1]
Shields' most regular competition came against drivers rated between 2,251 and 2,433, a peer group of semi-professional and competitive amateur racers. Against Cameron Tedder, an FIA Silver graded driver, he finished ahead in four of twelve shared races but trailed in eight. His record against Jeff Stern, champion of the 2019 Lucas Oil Formula Car Race Series Masters, was even at six wins and six losses from twelve meetings. Against Pat Daly and Mo Smith, both rated in the 2,400s, Shields more often finished behind than ahead. His single victories against stronger drivers were isolated results: he beat Jose Blanco, an FIA Silver driver rated 3,645, once, and Ryan Nash, also FIA Silver at 3,491, once, but these did not recur across further meetings in the same series.
Shields retired from racing after 2017 and has not returned to competition since. His career was confined to a single-seater formula series at club level, where he proved a consistent front-runner among competitive amateurs but did not progress to the professional ranks.
