Carlos Linares, a Venezuelan driver, competed in three seasons of Star Mazda Championship racing from 2010 to 2012, starting 39 races without recording a win or podium finish. His average finishing position of 12.6 places him in the competitive amateur band at a rating of 2,913; this level describes a driver quick enough to run regularly among professionals but unable to beat them consistently. Linares's record against his most frequent rivals illustrates this gap. He finished behind FIA Gold-graded drivers Gustavo Menezes (a WEC LMP2 champion), Connor De Phillippi (GT World Challenge America Pro champion), and Tristan Vautier (2011 Star Mazda champion) in the vast majority of their shared races; across 38 races against De Phillippi, for instance, Linares finished ahead only six times.[1]
Despite this lopsided head-to-head record, Linares did occasionally beat established competitors. He finished ahead of Menezes five times, De Phillippi six times, and Ryan Tveter (a driver rated 5,590) seven times across their respective shared races. These isolated victories show competitiveness on particular days rather than a sustained pattern of outperforming stronger rivals. Linares raced for Linares Racing, a team that managed 39 of his 39 starts and recorded one win across its entire record with a driver roster that included Kevin Toledo, the team's strongest competitor. His career concluded at the 2012 Star Mazda season, where he finished twentieth overall with no wins or podiums in sixteen rounds.
