Curtis Markham was a professional racing driver who competed in NASCAR Xfinity across 12 seasons from 1983 to 2000, primarily for Joe Gibbs Racing and Hensley Motorsports. He ran 89 starts in the series, racing ovals for the vast majority of his career with occasional outings on road and street courses.[1]
Markham's record in Xfinity placed him among the mid-field regulars of his era. His closest competition came against Phil Parsons and Mike McLaughlin, both professionals with extensive Xfinity experience; Markham ran evenly matched with each of them across multiple seasons. He finished ahead of Tony Stewart, then an established professional and future IndyCar champion, on 11 occasions across their meetings in the series, and scored a single win against Kevin Harvick, who would go on to win two Xfinity championships and compete at the Cup Series level.[2]
Markham shared the grid with a field mixing amateur and semi-professional drivers alongside graded professionals. His 89 starts across the 1980s and 1990s placed him among the series' regular competitors rather than at its front; the consistency of his matchups against Parsons and McLaughlin, both of whom accumulated several hundred starts in the same championship, defined his standing in that company.
