Frank Dochnal made a single Formula 1 start at the 1963 Mexican Grand Prix, driving a Cooper-Climax at the age of 43. He qualified 18th and did not finish the race. His entry represented an attempt to break into Grand Prix racing after establishing himself in local racing in Missouri, but the effort came to nothing. He crashed during unofficial practice at the circuit and the experience marked the end of his racing career.[1]
Dochnal's competitive record places him well outside the professional categories that dominate contemporary motorsport. His sole Grand Prix appearance came against a field of established drivers, and his inability to progress beyond a single race demonstrated the gap between club-level success and the demands of international single-seater racing. After retiring from driving, he transitioned into a career as a race mechanic, later working for Howard Hughes and in an official capacity for USAC.[2]
