Against the regular field he raced, he typically finished behind established names such as Randy LaJoie, a two-time series champion with over 350 starts, and Mike McLaughlin, who had over 300 series starts. Sauter finished ahead of Matt Kenseth, then an established professional who went on to race both Xfinity and NASCAR's top series, once across their meetings; he also beat Elton Sawyer, a professional with nearly 400 Xfinity starts, in at least one race.[2]
