Matt Cowley was a semi-professional endurance racing driver competing in the British GT Championship, a national multiclass series in which GT4 cars and other machinery share the grid with amateurs and graded professionals. He raced for Academy Motorsport, a small team based in the series, driving GT4 cars across five seasons from 2020 to 2024.[1]
Cowley took six wins and ten podiums across 39 starts in British GT, with his career defined by consistency in a competitive field. He won the 2023 British GT Championship GT4 title with Academy Motorsport, the centrepiece of a career otherwise built on regular finishes against drivers of similar standing. His record included single victories over established professionals; he finished ahead of Tom Ingram, a two-time BTCC champion and Gold-graded driver, and Ben Green, a Platinum-graded professional with experience across GT World Challenge Europe, ADAC GT Masters and DTM. These were one-off results against much stronger drivers rather than a pattern of dominance.[2]
Cowley spent his five seasons racing the same regular opponents in the British GT grid. His closest competitors were Jack Brown and Chris Salkeld, both entry-level professionals with dozens of British GT starts apiece, and with both drivers he maintained a closely matched record across multiple meetings. He retired after the 2024 season.
