Michael LaMaina is a club-level driver racing in national amateur and semi-professional multiclass championships across the United States. He competes primarily in SCCA Regionals, where he has started 145 times since 2022, and also races SCCA Majors and the SCCA Runoffs. His machinery spans spec Mazda MX-5s, one-design Spec Racer Fords, and near-stock street cars across multiple classes; his sole championship came in 2023 SCCA Regionals T4.[1]
LaMaina has taken six wins and 38 podiums across 199 starts from 2016 onwards. The bulk of his activity centres on SCCA Regionals, where he has recorded six wins and 35 podiums; he has also taken three podiums in SCCA Majors competition. His early racing included three NASA starts in 2016 and four appearances at the SCCA Runoffs between 2020 and 2022.[2]
In the fields he races, he typically finishes behind established regulars; he usually places behind Jeremy Butz, a semi-professional driver and two-time SCCA Regionals T4 champion, and John Hotz, a competitive amateur and 2023 SCCA Regionals SM champion. LaMaina has nonetheless beaten established professionals on occasion, including Matthew Payne, an FIA Gold-graded driver with extensive Supercars Championship and European Le Mans Series experience, and Connor Zilisch, an FIA Gold-graded professional with multiple NASCAR Xfinity and NASCAR Cup Series starts alongside his racing in the Mazda MX-5 Cup.
