Peter Broeker was a Canadian racing driver and constructor who made a single appearance in Formula 1 at the 1963 United States Grand Prix. Driving a Stebro, a car of his own construction, he qualified for the race and finished seventh, 22 laps down, without scoring championship points. His entry was notable as the first World Championship Formula 1 start by a Canadian in a Canadian-built car. The performance was achieved despite a substantial power deficit; contemporary reporting indicated his car produced more than 80 horsepower less than the rest of the field.[1]
In that single start, Broeker finished ahead of several drivers of considerably stronger competitive standing, including multiple-time Grand Prix winners Bruce McLaren, Jim Hall, and John Surtees, as well as Jo Bonnier. The result was unusual enough to rank among the most competitive single-start Formula 1 careers in the historical record, though it represents a one-race snapshot rather than sustained performance at that level. His career on record ended with that 1963 appearance. Broeker remained active in motorsport through his performance parts company, Stebro, which has continued in operation.[2]
