Austin Versteeg was an entry-level professional racing solo in the national IMSA Mazda Prototype Lites series and the SKUSA SuperNationals, a multiclass karting championship. He drove for JDC Motorsports in prototype machinery and was graded FIA Silver, a classification for drivers establishing themselves in sportscar racing rather than those at full professional level.[1]
Versteeg won the 2016 IMSA Mazda Prototype Lites championship with JDC Motorsports, taking seven wins from eleven starts and eight podium finishes in that season. His earlier record included three starts at the SKUSA SuperNationals between 2011 and 2013. His career spanned four seasons across these indexed series before his retirement in 2013.[2]
He raced regularly against Clark Toppe, an entry-level professional and fellow FIA Silver driver, and typically finished ahead of Kyle Masson, a 2017 IMSA Prototype Challenge champion. The only occasions on record where Versteeg finished ahead of drivers at a significantly higher level were single race meetings against David Malukas, who would go on to race in IndyCar and Indy NXT, and Santino Ferrucci, an FIA Gold professional with extensive Formula 2 and IndyCar experience.
