Among his opponents were Sam Ard, the 1983 and 1984 NASCAR Xfinity champion, whom Armstrong typically finished behind; he nonetheless beat Ard once over their meetings. Armstrong finished ahead of L.D. Ottinger, a professional driver with 206 NASCAR Xfinity starts, on two occasions, and ran closely matched against Dale Arnold Jarrett, a fellow professional with 329 series starts.[2]
