Tommy Houston is an entry-level professional who raced in NASCAR Xfinity, the national single-class championship run on ovals and occasional road courses. He competed for Houston Racing across 15 seasons from 1982 to 1996, compiling 24 wins and 68 podiums from 417 starts, mostly on short and intermediate ovals.[1]
Houston's career placed him among the steady mid-field runners in Xfinity during the 1980s and early 1990s. He finished 30th in championship points in his final season, 1996. He met established competitors regularly; his record against Jack Ingram, the two-time Xfinity champion and fellow journeyman of that era, was closely matched across multiple seasons. He also ran regularly against Dale Arnold Jarrett and finished ahead of both Tony Stewart, who would go on to become an established professional and IndyCar champion, and Dale Earnhardt Jr., who won back-to-back Xfinity titles in 1998 and 1999. These results came in a field that mixed amateur and semi-professional entrants with graded professionals in the same races, and his consistency in that company over more than a decade established him as a fixture of the series during its growth period in that decade.[2]
