Heinz Schmersal was a semi-professional endurance racer with a rating of 3,723, placing him at the level of drivers who win regularly in pro-am and one-make fields and compete comfortably among full professionals in mixed classes. His career, running from 2010 to 2016, centred entirely on the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie, where he made 28 starts in car number 323. He won six races and finished on the podium eleven times, averaging a fifth-place finish across all classified starts. He was most successful in 2010, when he secured the SP 6 championship; afterwards his results declined, and his final two rounds in 2016 yielded no podiums and a twenty-third place finish.[1]

Schmersal's head-to-head record against his peers revealed a driver competitive at his level but not dominant among the stronger racers in the field. He finished ahead of Christoph Breuer, a multiple SP 3T champion and the stronger driver on rating, only twice in ten meetings; over the same span he trailed Breuer eight times. He similarly struggled against Dieter Schmidtmann, an FIA Bronze-graded professional who beat him five times in seven races. Against Atle Gulbrandsen, a mid-tier competitor, Schmersal could not manage a single finish ahead in six races. His occasional wins over established professionals such as Christian Krognes, an FIA Gold-graded champion, and Tristan Gommendy, an FIA Platinum-graded driver, were isolated results rather than recurring patterns in what was otherwise an outmatched contest.

His most consistent finishes came early in his career. After 2010 he rarely contended for podiums in the increasingly competitive field, and his spell with car number 180, a team that had fielded stronger drivers, saw him as one of its less successful entries. Schmersal retired from racing after the 2016 season.
