John Chism is a semi-professional driver whose rating of 3,281 places him in the competitive amateur band; his single season of racing comprises club and entry-level professional competition. His career on record consists of four starts in the 2005 Star Mazda Championship, a single-seater series, where he failed to score a podium finish and ended the season in 30th place overall.[1]
Chism raced alongside a field containing multiple professional-graded drivers, including Marco Andretti and Graham Rahal, both FIA Gold graded, and James Hinchcliffe, an FIA Gold professional. Against this company Chism compiled a losing record in most head-to-head matchups. He finished ahead of Rahal once across their four shared races but trailed Hinchcliffe in all four meetings. He also beat Rahal's contemporary Sean Guthrie once and Adrian Carrio, who would win the Star Mazda Championship the following year, once; he matched Marco Andretti twice in four races. His average finishing position of 24.5 across his classified starts reflects consistent running at the back of the field among these established professionals and semi-professionals. Chism raced for JCS Motorworks, a team that fielded only his entries in the index and recorded no race wins across that tenure.
