Antonio Pizzonia is a retired Brazilian racing driver rated 6,490, placing him at the level of an established professional. This rating reflects a driver capable of wins in strong fields and a full-time seat at the top level of motorsport; Pizzonia held that seat in Formula 1, though his record there does not show the performance his rating might suggest. His career encompassed 27 starts across seven seasons from 2003 to 2016, yielding a single win and one podium finish overall, both from his World Endurance Championship programme with Manor.[1]
Pizzonia's Formula 1 career spanned three seasons from 2003 to 2005, all with Williams, accumulating 20 starts without a podium. He competed regularly against generational talents and multi-time champions. Against Michael Schumacher, Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello, Pizzonia's head-to-head records were decisively negative; he finished ahead of Button once in nine meetings but trailed Schumacher eight times from nine races and Barrichello nine times from eleven. He managed three victories over David Coulthard, a much stronger driver, and three over Mark Webber, the latter a performance of note given Webber's later dominance in endurance racing as the 2016 WEC LMP1 champion. A single Formula 1 outing in 2008 and three GP2 Series starts in 2007 yielded no results. His one competitive success came in the 2013 to 2016 WEC period, where he secured a win and one further podium finish across three starts, racing at Gold level in sportscar endurance racing alongside drivers of comparable professional standing.[2]
Pizzonia retired from racing after 2016. His average finishing position across all classified races was 9.6th. His career progression from junior formula success, through Formula 1 competition against champions, to selective sportscar racing in his thirties reflects a professional racing driver of established standing who did not sustain the performance level his rating suggests his capabilities should have delivered at the highest single-seater level.
