Darren Keane is a competitive amateur, rated 2,294. This level describes drivers who race at the sharp end of club and regional racing, often self-funded, and compete regularly against professionals rather than with them.[1]
Keane contested eight races across two series between 2012 and 2017, chiefly in SKUSA SuperNationals, where he made five starts without reaching the podium. His sole podium finish came in the Lucas Oil Formula Car Race Series in 2016. Across his racing record he averaged eighth place, and his head-to-head results against frequent rivals were mixed; he split his races evenly with Mathias Soler, the 2016 Lucas Oil Formula Car Race Series champion, and held winning records against Chris Archinaco and Christian Brooks, a professional-level driver graded FIA Silver. However, Keane finished behind Aaron Jeansonne, also FIA Silver, more often than ahead.
The most striking entries on Keane's record are isolated finishes ahead of much stronger drivers: he beat Rinus VeeKay, an FIA Gold driver and 2018 Pro Mazda champion; Colton Herta, an FIA Platinum professional; and Julien Andlauer, an FIA Gold-graded sportscar driver and 2018 WEC LMGTE Am champion. These were single-race results rather than patterns in a sustained rivalry, suggesting occasional competitive moments in fields beyond his usual level. Keane retired from racing after the 2017 SKUSA SuperNationals.
