Fahmi Ilyas raced single-seaters, solo in single-class championships where amateur and semi-professional drivers shared the grid with graded professionals. The Malaysian spent most of his career with Double R Racing, an established team that has also fielded elite professional Mitch Evans, driving Formula 3 machinery in FIA Formula 3 European and the Formula 3 Euro Series, with an earlier season in Formula Renault Eurocup for Fortec Motorsports. His Racer Rating of 4,171 places him at the professional level.[1]
Across 2011 and 2012 Ilyas made fifteen starts: nine in FIA Formula 3 European, four in the Formula 3 Euro Series, and two in Formula Renault Eurocup. That Formula Renault Eurocup campaign, his most recent recorded season, ended with him 21st in the championship standings. He has not raced since, retiring at the end of 2012 after two seasons confined to Europe's junior single-seater ranks.[2]
Formula 3 in this period put him on track regularly with Carlos Sainz and Raffaele Marciello, both of whom went on to become FIA Platinum-graded professionals, Sainz as a Formula 1 race winner and 2014 Formula V8 3.5 champion, Marciello as the 2013 FIA Formula 3 European champion among other titles; against both, Ilyas usually finished behind. He did, however, beat Sainz twice and also beat Felix Rosenqvist, later the 2015 FIA Formula 3 European champion, on two occasions.
