Jay Salmon was a competitive amateur racer in IMSA prototype racing, competing in a national multiclass championship that mixed amateur and semi-professional entrants with graded professionals. He drove Mazda-powered Elan DP02 prototypes for ODU Motorsports in the IMSA Prototype Challenge and raced in both classes of the IMSA Mazda Prototype Lites for ODU Engineering between 2016 and 2017.[1]
Salmon took a win and one podium finish across his two seasons, which comprised five starts in Mazda Prototype Lites in 2016 and seven starts in Prototype Challenge in 2017, when he finished 14th in the season standings. His racing came against regular opponents at entry-level professional level; he typically finished behind Kyle Masson, the 2017 IMSA Prototype Challenge MPC champion, and Stuart Rettie, though he beat Masson three times and took a win over Brian Alder, another entry-level professional competitor.
