Jon Branam is a retired American driver who competed in single-seaters and sportscar racing across seventeen years, from 2005 to 2023. Classified as Bronze by the FIA, an amateur grading within endurance and GT racing, Branam raced primarily in the Star Mazda Championship during 2005 and 2006, where he made 17 starts for American Speed Factory without reaching the podium. He finished those races an average of 18.7 positions down the order, consistently behind the field's established professionals and champions. His rivals in that series included Adrian Carrio, a one-time champion whom Branam finished ahead of in only 4 of their 17 races, and Ryan Justice, against whom he held the same 4-13 record. John Pew, an FIA Silverโgraded professional and therefore a full career driver in sportscar racing, finished ahead of Branam 6 times to his 11, a closer comparison that reflects Pew's standing as a significantly stronger competitor.[1]
Branam returned to racing in 2020 after a fourteen-year hiatus, competing in IMSA Prototype Challenge and IMSA Pilot Challenge over four separate entries in 2020, 2022, and 2023. He scored no podiums in either series. Despite his weak head-to-head record in Star Mazda, Branam occasionally finished ahead of much stronger drivers; he beat Graham Rahal, an FIA Gold professional and established race winner rated 6,122, on three occasions, and picked up single finishes over FIA Gold drivers Nolan Siegel, Neil Verhagen, and Jens Klingmann. These were isolated results rather than patterns, however, and reflected the nature of sportscar and single-seater grids where grid position, setup and circumstance can produce surprises. Across 21 career starts, Branam won no races and never finished on a podium, placing him firmly at the amateur level of professional motorsport.
