Dan Tomlin III was a semi-professional racing in the Star Mazda Championship, a national single-seater series mixing amateur and professional drivers. He raced for Team Tomlin across seven seasons from 2002 to 2008, compiling 46 starts in the series.[1]

Tomlin's career ran the length of the Star Mazda Championship's evolution through that period without yielding a win. His final season, in 2008, saw him finish 21st in the championship standings. He was a regular presence in the field alongside his teammate Dan Tomlin Jr., an entry-level professional who typically outpaced him over the course of their shared campaigns. John Faulkner, another entry-level professional in the same series, also finished ahead of Tomlin more often than not.[2]

Tomlin's occasional podium finishes included victories over established professionals: he beat Michael McDowell, the 2004 Star Mazda champion and later a NASCAR Cup Series regular, once across their 19 meetings, and defeated Graham Rahal, a long-term IndyCar driver, in a single encounter. These were isolated results in a body of work spent mid-field against a field where the strongest drivers were entry-level professionals and occasional established names passing through the series.
