Dan Tomlin III was a competitive amateur who raced in the Star Mazda Championship from 2002 to 2008. His Racer Rating of 2,745 places him in the club racing band; this level describes a driver who competes in regional and amateur fields and typically does not beat full professionals. Tomlin made 46 starts across seven seasons but recorded no wins or podiums. His average finishing position of 25th through the field reflects a career at the back of his series' competitive order.[1]

On single occasions he finished ahead of much stronger drivers including Michael McDowell, who won the 2004 Star Mazda Championship at an elite level, Graham Rahal, and Ricky Taylor, each championship-winning drivers at the top level of international motorsport. These isolated results were exceptions rather than evidence of competitive parity; his typical performance throughout his career was to race mid-pack among amateurs and lose ground to the professionals around him.
