Al Carter is a retired semi-professional endurance racing driver who raced crewed cars in multiclass championships across IMSA and American Endurance Racing between 2011 and 2023. Graded FIA Silver, Carter was competitive at the level below the established professional ranks in sportscars. His primary focus was American Endurance Racing's Class 5, where he claimed 13 wins and 23 podiums across 28 starts from 2018 to 2021.[1]
Carter won American Endurance Racing's Class 5 championship in consecutive seasons, 2019 and 2020, establishing himself as a regular front-runner in that field. Before then he raced IMSA Pilot Challenge for Automatic Racing from 2016 to 2018, taking a single victory and two podiums in nine starts. He also competed in IMSA WeatherTech for Riley Motorsports in 2014 and 2015, and made a late career appearance in GT4 America's Am class in 2023 for Random Vandals Racing, posting three podiums in seven starts. His 58 career starts across these series produced 14 wins and 29 podiums overall.[2]
Carter raced regularly against Nelson Canache, the 2018 American Endurance Racing Class 5 champion, and finished races closely matched with him. He beat Kevin Estre, an established professional and FIA Platinum-graded driver who has competed in the WEC World Endurance Championship, on three occasions in shared-grid racing. His results included a finish ahead of Chase Briscoe, an elite professional with extensive NASCAR Cup Series experience, in one race.
