Brian Redman was a British racing driver who competed in Formula 1 between 1968 and 1974, recording 12 starts for Shadow without a race victory. His single podium finish came during this period, placing him in the middle order of the grid relative to his peers. Across his classified starts, Redman averaged a seventh-place finish, a respectable showing given the quality of drivers he faced; he shared races with three-time champions Jackie Stewart and Graham Hill, as well as 1974 World Champion Emerson Fittipaldi's generation of competitors.[1]
Redman's record against front-running professionals was mixed. He finished ahead of Stewart once in their four shared races, outran the 1-time champion Denny Hulme on one occasion despite a losing head-to-head record of 1–5 across six encounters, and beat Graham Hill in four of six meetings. Against Jean-Pierre Beltoise and Ronnie Peterson, both competitive drivers of the era, Redman held an even record. These results place him as a competent mid-field performer rather than a grid leader, unable to sustain a pattern of beating established champions but capable of strong results against them individually.[2]
Shadow, Redman's primary team, fielded him for four of his twelve starts. The team achieved one race win across its entire history and included the stronger driver Riccardo Patrese among its roster, indicating Redman was not among Shadow's standout talents. Redman has since retired from racing and in recent years has been active in vintage racing and motorsport commentary, reflecting on his competitive years.
