John Surtees was a professional racing driver who competed in Formula 1 over thirteen seasons from 1960 to 1972, accumulating 112 starts and averaging a classified finish of fourth position. His Racer Rating of 7,108 places him among established professional drivers; this level means a race winner consistently operating at the top, capable of beating elite competition. Surtees won six Grand Prix races and finished on the podium 24 times, achievements built on a foundation as a seven-time Grand Prix motorcycle World Champion before his four-wheel racing career began.[1]
His Formula 1 record reveals a driver who competed consistently among the very strongest fields of his era. Against his most frequent rivals, Surtees showed a mixed head-to-head record; he finished behind Jim Clark, a two-time champion and significantly stronger driver, in eighteen of their twenty-seven shared races, and was outpaced by Bruce McLaren in nearly every meeting. However, he held the better of his rivalry with Jo Siffert, finished evenly with Graham Hill across their twenty-six races together, and beat Jack Brabham, a three-time champion, in fifteen of their twenty-three encounters. Most tellingly, Surtees demonstrated the capacity to beat elite drivers in single strong performances, prevailing six times against Jackie Stewart, a three-time champion and generational talent.[2]
Surtees spent the bulk of his career with Ferrari, for whom he drove in thirty races. His most notable achievement came in 1964, when he won the Formula One World Drivers' Championship at Ferrari, becoming the only driver ever to win World Championships on both motorcycles and automobiles. His final season, 1972, saw only a single start and no points finishes, marking the end of an extended professional racing career.
