Clay Regazzoni was an elite professional driver rated 7,362, placing him among the strongest competitors of his era in Formula 1. His career spanned eleven seasons from 1970 to 1980, during which he accumulated 131 starts, five wins, and 28 podium finishes across a field that included multiple world champions. Regazzoni's average finishing position of sixth demonstrates consistent competence at the highest level, and he was runner-up for the Formula 1 World Drivers' Championship in 1974 while driving for Ferrari, the zenith of his career.[1]

His competitive record against contemporary Formula 1 front-runners reveals a driver of genuine standing but one who sat in the middle tier of his peer group. Regazzoni held an even 25-25 head-to-head record against two-time world champion Emerson Fittipaldi over 50 shared races, and finished ahead of multiple champions and elite drivers on multiple occasions: he beat three-time champion Jackie Stewart four times, and held winning records against fellow championship contenders Jody Scheckter and Carlos Reutemann.
