J.P. Southern is a competitive amateur racer with a Racer Rating of 2,320, placing him in the club racing band; this level represents the front of club and regional racing, typically quick self-funded drivers competing against professionals rather than alongside them. Southern's career on record spans a single season in 2017, when he contested the Lucas Oil Formula Car Race Series across four rounds. He scored one win and two podiums to finish twentieth overall in the championship, averaging a fifth-place finish across his starts.[1]

Southern's record against the field reveals a mixed picture. He finished ahead of Justin Brunner, the 2017 Lucas Oil Formula Car Race Series champion, in all three races they shared, a notable result; he also beat three separate FIA Silver-graded professionals once each, including Aaron Jeansonne and Myles Rowe, who went on to win the 2023 USF Pro 2000 championship. However, Southern's head-to-head record against most of his rivals ran against him; he trailed Jeansonne and Rowe two times each across their shared races, and finished behind Tyler O'Connor and Ethan Billions more often than not. Against Wyatt Brichacek, another FIA Silver driver, Southern won two of three encounters.

Southern retired from racing after 2017 and has not raced competitively since.
