Lawson finished 41st in the final 1987 NASCAR Xfinity championship standings in a full season of seven rounds. His most notable finishes came against established opposition; he beat Sam Ard, the 1983 and 1984 NASCAR Xfinity champion, five times across their meetings, and finished ahead of Eddie Johnson, a professional who had also raced in Formula 1, on four occasions. He was a regular competitor against Tommy Houston and Dale Arnold Jarrett, both entry-level and professional drivers respectively with considerably deeper records in the series, though he typically finished behind them. Lawson's career in indexed racing ended in 1987.[2]
