Matt Simpson is a retired British touring car driver who competed in the BTCC between 2016 and 2019, accumulating 120 starts across four seasons. He came to the championship after claiming back-to-back titles in the Quaife Intermarque Championship in 2013 and 2014. His BTCC career yielded one victory, achieved in 2018, and two podium finishes overall; he finished his final season in 2019 in twenty-fourth place.[1]
Simpson's record against the field reveals a consistent pattern of racing against established professionals and champions. Over 83 shared races with Andrew Jordan, a former champion, Simpson finished ahead on 11 occasions but trailed significantly more often. Against Colin Turkington, a Gold-graded former champion, the disparity widened to 14 victories against 67 defeats across 81 encounters. Similarly outpaced by multiple Gold-graded and multi-time champions including Tom Ingram and Ash Sutton, Simpson nonetheless managed to beat both of them on multiple occasions; he finished ahead of Ingram 8 times in 79 races and ahead of Sutton 18 times in 79 races. His average finishing position of sixteenth reflects the competitive nature of the field in which he raced. Simpson's sole BTCC win came in 2018 before a mid-season split with Eurotech Racing; he completed the remainder of his career with Simpson Racing as his primary team.[2]
