Barber finished 14th in the 2005 Formula Renault Eurcup championship with one podium finish across the season. He was more often ahead of Xavier Maassen, a professional-level driver with extensive Formula Renault experience, and occasionally outpaced stronger opponents; he beat Bertrand Baguette, an established professional and later champion of Formula V8 3.5 and Super GT, twice, and Jerome d'Ambrosio, an established professional who would go on to race in Formula 1 and Formula E, once. He typically finished behind Michael Ammermüller, an FIA Platinum-graded driver and eventual Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup champion with far deeper single-seater experience. Prior to his indexed career, Barber won the 2002 British Formula Ford championship and the 1998 French Formula Renault Campus title.[2]
