Al Herman was an established professional racing in Formula 1, a single-class international championship that fielded drivers across a wide range of experience levels. He drove for Ewing across five seasons between 1955 and 1960, making five starts in the series.[1]
Herman finished 14th in the championship standings in 1960, his final season of racing on record. He occasionally finished ahead of established professionals who competed in the same era; he beat Jim Rathmann and Duane Carter once each across their meetings. More often, however, he finished behind the regular opponents he faced most frequently, including Rathmann and Tony Bettenhausen, both of whom had considerably more starts in Formula 1 than Herman did.[2]
