Al Herman was an American racing driver who competed in Formula 1 between 1955 and 1960, entering five races for the Ewing team without scoring a podium finish. His average finishing position across his classified starts was 17th, placing him in a professional field populated by drivers of substantial calibre; his most frequent rivals included Jim Rathmann, Duane Carter, Tony Bettenhausen, Eddie Johnson and Johnny Thomson, all of whom held ratings above 4,800. Herman finished ahead of Rathmann and Carter once each in three shared races against each driver, a modest head-to-head record against competitors of that standing.[1]
Over the course of his five-race career, Herman's best results came against established professionals. He finished ahead of Pat Flaherty, a driver rated 4,826, and also ahead of Rathmann, Carter and Eddie Johnson on single occasions, though these remained isolated successes in otherwise unsuccessful matchups. Against Tony Bettenhausen and Johnny Thomson, both strong drivers in the same era, Herman did not record a finish ahead of them across three races each. The Dunn team fielded Herman in two of his starts but recorded no wins in the index and fielded no driver stronger than Herman himself. Herman's racing career remains retired as of his most recent recorded activity in 1960.
