Sam Hanks was an American racing driver who competed in Formula 1 between 1950 and 1957, recording eight starts, one victory, and four podium finishes. His racing career centred on single-seater and Championship car competition, and he raced primarily for Kurtis Kraft, one of the era's prominent constructors. Hanks held a Racer Rating of 4,988, placing him in the upper tier of professional drivers of his era.[1]
Hanks finished ahead of several strong contemporaries during his career. He recorded a winning record against Jimmy Bryan, Gene Hartley, Tony Bettenhausen and others who competed at similar level, though his record against Jim Rathmann, a more accomplished driver in the professional field, showed two victories against one defeat across their three shared races. His average finishing position of fourth across all classified starts reflected consistent competitive performance. His single Formula 1 victory came in 1957, the same year he concluded his recorded racing activity.[2]
