Peter Collins was a British Formula 1 driver who competed in the world championship between 1952 and 1958, amassing 33 starts for Ferrari. Over seven seasons he scored three grand prix victories and nine podium finishes, with an average finishing position of fourth across all classified races. His Racer Rating of 4,904 places him in the upper tier of professional drivers of that era, though below the dominant figures of the period. Collins raced alongside some of the strongest competitors in early Formula 1 history, including Juan Fangio, Stirling Moss, and Mike Hawthorn; while he was outpaced by Fangio across their eight meetings, Collins finished ahead of the five-time champion on one occasion and held a winning record against Moss, beating him six times in ten shared races.[1]

Collins's record against his most frequent competitors reveals a driver of genuine standing. He dominated Jean Behra and Harry Schell in head-to-head meetings, finishing ahead in seven and six races respectively. Against Mike Hawthorn, a world champion, Collins was the inferior; Hawthorn finished ahead in six of their nine races. His strongest performances came in 1958, his final season, when he scored one win and two podiums across seven rounds to finish fifth in the championship. Beyond his Formula 1 career, Collins also won the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1958, demonstrating his capabilities in endurance racing as well.[2]
