Stirling Moss was a British Formula 1 driver who raced from 1951 to 1961 as an elite professional, competing across 67 starts largely for Lotus-Climax. His record rating of 6,330 places him among the strongest drivers of his era, measured against the calibre of opposition he faced week to week.[1]

Moss took 16 wins and 24 podiums across his Formula 1 career. His final season, 1961, yielded two wins and two podiums from eight rounds, with a third-place finish in the championship standings. He regularly finished ahead of established professionals such as Harry Schell and ran closely matched against Maurice Trintignant, both Formula 1 regulars with dozens of starts between them.[2]

He finished ahead of Juan Fangio, the five-time Formula 1 champion, on seven occasions, and beat Jim Clark, a two-time Formula 1 champion, four times. These results place him in a field that included the era's dominant drivers; that Moss never won a championship despite this record reflects both the depth of competition and the circumstances of individual seasons rather than any gap in his calibre against the best drivers of his time.
