Stirling Moss was an elite professional racing driver, placing him at the very top of international motorsport during his era. His Racer Rating of 7,480 reflects a career spent consistently among the world's fastest drivers; he averaged a finishing position of 3.5 across 67 Formula 1 starts between 1951 and 1961, winning 16 races and podiuming in 24 of them. This calibre of sustained performance put him in regular competition with the finest drivers of the period, including five-time Formula 1 World Champion Juan Fangio, whom Moss finished ahead of in seven of their 19 shared races despite being outfinished overall by 12 to 7.[1]

Moss raced primarily in Formula 1 for Lotus-Climax in his final seasons, though his career encompassed multiple disciplines; the biographical record notes victories in endurance racing including the 12 Hours of Sebring and the Mille Miglia. Within Formula 1 alone, Moss showed particular strength against peers such as Harry Schell, Mike Hawthorn and Maurice Trintignant, finishing ahead of Schell in 15 of 17 shared races and ahead of championship-winning drivers Hawthorn and Jean Behra more often than not. His performance in 1961, his final season, saw him finish third in the championship with two wins and two podiums from eight starts before his retirement.[2]

Moss never won the Formula 1 World Drivers' Championship despite his competitive record against multiple champions and his 16 Grand Prix victories. He remains widely regarded as one of the greatest drivers never to have secured the title, with his legacy shaped by consistency among the world's elite rather than championship success. His retirement in 1961 ended one of the most accomplished careers in the sport's early history.
