Josef Newgarden is an established professional racing driver for Team Penske in IndyCar, where he races a Dallara-Chevrolet in the single-driver, single-class championship. He holds an FIA Platinum grade and has been active in top-tier North American open-wheel racing since 2010.[1]

Newgarden has won three national championships across his career: the 2011 Indy NXT title with Sam Schmidt Motorsports, and back-to-back IndyCar championships in 2017 and 2019. In his fifteen seasons with IndyCar, he has taken 34 wins and 64 podiums from 251 starts, split evenly between oval and road/street racing. His two wins in the Indianapolis 500, which came consecutively, and his victory in the 2024 24 Hours of Daytona with Porsche Penske Motorsports in multiclass endurance racing have placed him among an exclusive group of drivers to have won both of those races. This season he has taken two wins and three podiums from eighteen rounds completed so far and currently sits eighth in the championship standings.[2]

Newgarden races regularly against Scott Dixon, a five-time IndyCar champion and fellow Platinum-graded driver, and Graham Rahal, a Gold-graded established professional; the record shows him closely matched with both. He has finished ahead of Alex Palou, the current elite professional who holds five consecutive IndyCar titles, across their 46 meetings in IndyCar, and has beaten Pato O'Ward, a former Indy NXT champion and IndyCar front-runner, 61 times over their career-long overlap.
