🇩🇪 Phil Hill

Phil Hill was an American racing driver who competed in single-seater Formula 1 racing from 1958 to 1964. Rated an established professional, he spent the bulk of his career with Ferrari, taking 31 of his 51 starts in red. Hill won the 1961 Formula 1 World Drivers' Championship, one of three Grand Prix victories he scored across eight seasons in the sport.[1]

Hill's record in Formula 1 placed him among the front-running drivers of his era. He finished 16 times on the podium across the seven seasons indexed here, competing regularly against Jack Brabham and Graham Hill, both multiple champions, with whom he was closely matched. He finished ahead of Jim Clark, a two-time world champion, on eight occasions, and outscored Richie Ginther nine times. His final indexed season came in 1964, when he completed nine rounds and finished 13th in the championship standings.[2]

Hill raced in an international field that mixed amateur and semi-professional entrants with established professionals. Among the drivers he met most often were Brabham, whose championship wins bracketed Hill's own in 1959 and 1960, and Graham Hill, who took the title in 1962. Hill's 1961 championship crowned him amid circumstances that would mark the date forever in Formula 1 history.
